Jennifer Johnston Terando, RN, ESQ
I’ve always been drawn to careers where I could help others, and I understand that my clients come to me in a time of need. I’m deeply compassionate toward those who put their trust in me and committed to helping them get results.
I like to joke that the upside of mid-life means I have years of knowledge and experience with which to assist my clients. My well-rounded career dates back over 20 years to when I obtained my BSN with honors from the Francis Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University and continued scholarship to Case Western Reserve University School of Law. There, I obtained my JD with a certificate in health law from the perennially recognized Law and Medicine Center and served as an associate editor on the Health Matrix: Journal of Law and Medicine.
I’ve worked as a Registered Nurse in medical-surgical and post-partum units, general pediatrics, a pediatric surgical floor, and NICU. I’ve practiced nursing in Ohio, Florida, and California, including at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital, where I served as charge nurse on a pediatric chronic care unit caring for children with medically-complex, high-needs conditions, and at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles.
I’m admitted to the state bars of California and Illinois. Prior to forming my own firm, I worked at law firms in Los Angeles and Chicago. For the first seven years of my legal career, I represented physicians, hospitals, and dialysis centers in medical negligence cases. Following this, I focused my practice on representing plaintiffs in catastrophic injury and wrongful death cases, including working with victims of the Asiana Air Crash in San Francisco in 2013. I utilize my health law training and experience to advise physicians in employment contract review and negotiation, and I frequently lecture resident physicians on this topic. Through Your RN Attorney, I represent clients in a variety of legal matters.
With up-close knowledge of the perspectives of both defendants and plaintiffs in litigation, coupled with understanding the time, expense, and uncertainty of trial, I’ve learned that only a select few cases are the right match for trial. Most cases reach a better financial result with a much lower emotional toll through settlement. As such, I’ve completed extensive mediation training and serve as a mediator in multiple capacities. In addition to providing mediation services through Your RN Attorney, I’m a panel member of the Mediation Center of Los Angeles, a panel mediator for the Burbank City Attorney’s Office for landlord-tenant disputes, an associate trainer for the USC Mediation Clinic at Gould School of Law, and I provide volunteer mediation services to the Los Angeles Superior Court through the Center for Conflict Resolution. I’m the immediate Past-President of The Southern California Mediation Association.
I’m married to a physician, and together we’re raising three great children. The devotion I have to my own family guides me when I’m serving my clients, who often become family to me.
